Underpinning career development at Virgin Money

Your Learning Lounge is Virgin Money's customised version of the award-winning GoodPractice toolkit. It complements the company's brand values and provides all employees with highly personalised learning, supporting development at every stage of their career journey.

THE COMPANY

Established in 1995 as Virgin Direct, the Virgin Money brand was created in 2000 as a financial services business.

From its headquarters in Newcastle, Virgin Money operates across the UK with around 3,000 employees, 75 retail stores and seven innovative Virgin Money Lounges. [1]

THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Virgin Money is at the forefront of a new breed of financial services businesses who do things differently. Following a period of rapid growth and reorganisation, the company’s overall approach to employee development evolved. Neither the content nor the technical capability of the previous platform matched the aspirations of this modern business. The L&D team’s vision was to introduce a modern and agile online learning solution, driving a more personalised, tailored approach to development.

One of the core requirements of the new digital platform was flexibility. It had to be able to evolve as the business changes, supporting employees across different roles and levels of responsibility.

The solution is Your Learning Lounge - a bespoke, branded version of the GoodPractice toolkit, with content mapped around key Virgin Money employee or colleague touchpoints. The product was developed specifically to encourage ‘pull’ from learners rather than ‘push’ from the L&D team. This is reflected by the language of the customised sections, which speak directly to learners themselves. Virgin Money took advantage of the toolkit’s flexible customisation options, re-naming the main sections as follows:

Arrivals and Passport Modules - This area supports new employees through the onboarding and induction process. Information about the Arrivals Event and mandatory e-learning modules are complemented by a welcome and explainer videos on essential topics for new starters. The Passport modules provide colleagues with direct access to all regulatory learning.

‘Everyone’s Better Off’ and Virgin Values - ‘Everyone’s Better Off’ (EBO) is Virgin Money’s company ethos. It’s about using expertise in a way that has a positive impact on everyone: colleagues, customers, corporate partners, the company and the community. This big part of the Virgin Money brand is translated into a behavioural and skills framework, with over 100 pieces of curated content supporting each element.

Me in My Career - Showcasing over 20 ‘Day in the Life’ stories from people working in key roles across Virgin Money, this section highlights the variety of development opportunities on offer, helping employees learn about specific roles. Significantly expanded to include in-depth Virgin Money content on each business function, this area links to a new development ‘heat map’ resource. Here, employees can identify their development needs for key roles, and quickly find content to address them.

Me as a Leader - This section is tailored around Virgin Money’s specific requirements, with content from GoodPractice mapped around their leadership values. It is immediately recognisable to employees and easy to navigate.

Me as a Manager, Me as a Person and Me and My Wellbeing - These sections contain content from GoodPractice’s in-depth, highly varied content library. Managers will find content to help them with the challenges of their role, alongside content focused on personal development and wellbeing.

THE RESULTS

Since launch in 2016, Your Learning Lounge has fast become the go-to destination for Virgin Money employees. This is reflected in exceptional usage:

- 90% of employees have accessed the site since launch

- Over 20,000 individual resources have been viewed

- Employees spend around four minutes per session
